Concrete Tree by Jeremy Cowart

My 2011 New Years resolution was “more personal work”. Little did I know it would be with an iPhone. I went on a volunteer trip with Hope International during the 1-year anniversary of the Haiti earthquake. In between shoots for Hope, I randomly started shooting with my iPhone and quickly became interested in the possibilities. I found that the iPhone gave me better access to my surroundings. Sometimes a big DSLR can intimidate people or draw a scene so the idea was to document everything in a subtle, respectful way and the iPhone allowed for just that.

Quarter Horse by Ryan Phillips

I shot this image at Long Hollow Ranch in Terrebonne, Oregon in the winter of 2009. I had never seen freezing fog before and it doesn’t happen often. It is simply amazing!

Everything is covered in white but you can still see the organic shape and structure of the ground and trees as it is covered in fog not snow. Fog comes into the low lying valleys and if the temperature drops below freezing while that thick layer of fog is hanging, it just freezes and sticks to everything.

This print was recently printed 14 feet across by 7 feet high and hangs in the home of Wayne and Janet Gretzky. The print is face mounted to glass and backed with 1/8 inch aluminum di-bond. It is the only printed piece of this image currently in existence.

These photographs were made while wandering throughout the often untraveled backroads of the west, in search of a more real America than the one most of us are familiar with. By taking smaller highways and exploring forgotten towns, I found that America is a place with a sense of poetic beauty and grandeur. Perhaps these photographs will serve as a vehicle for a type of cultural self reflection, to know that our country has more than golden arches, strip malls and track homes. America has character and lots of it!

Hospital Ward II by Yuri Mader

Ellis Island Selected Works : Artists Statement

Objects of dreams and desires, I had long hoped to photograph there. When the chance came, the crumbling ruin was more daunting than I imagined, an endless maze of dank and decay, dead birds, musty smells, and asbestos dust. Yet it is beautiful, filled with strange objects, ghosts flickering in windows and on the walls. A museum of dust.

My photographic work explores issues of race, exile, and American identity. The child of European refugees, I was inspired by my family tragedies to search for universal meaning in stories that often divide more than they unite. Language and self-knowledge, patriotism and shame, timelessness and mortality; all are concurrent themes that run through my work.

6 1 by Andrei Baciu

This photo belongs to my Winterly Haiku series. This group of photos won a highly commended distinction in Digital Camera Photographer of the Year 2010. The motto of the series reads as follows: “Maybe sometimes the meaning of a photograph doesn’t reside in transcending the one thousand words’ border. Not at all, but, exactly on the contrary, a photo may well fulfill it’s goal by simply suggesting that, be it from time to time, moving closer to the gentle fields of silence represents a higher wisdom. By taking and, especially, making the photos above, their author began to remember. He began to remember that, in order to hear properly, what he needed first was a fruitful quietness.”

If I told you that I was going to make a connection between fine art photography and those famous robots The Transformers, you might think I had gone mad. So, today I am going to make a connection between fine art photography and those famous robots The Transformers. Still with me? Good, because you are about to be exposed to the work of one of the most talented photographers that I have come across in recent times.

Toledo, Spain born Juan Baraja is one awesome photographer. Having completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Barcelona in 2001, Baraja has gone on to win multiple awards including first prize at the XXII Concurso De Fotografia-Arquitectura 2010 COACM and first prize at the VI Concurso de Reportaje Fotografico ARCO Madrid to name a few. If he keeps up what he has been doing there are sure to be plenty more awards to come.

In the same way that The Transformers bring robots to life thus giving personalities to inanimate objects, Baraja’s photos make machines and other industrial objects appear alive and animated. Amazingly, Baraja has been able to give life to inanimate objects AND create still scenes that evoke a sense of anticipation and progression that actually animates the images. The perspective, lighting and environment play a big part in the drama and tension that exist in many of Baraja’s photos. Unusual patterns of illumination from unascribable sources of light create tension and a sense of impending action from outside the viewing window.

With ‘Metamorfosis Nocturna’, an image from Baraja’s Dock series that I have been referring to, what appears to be some sort of crane or conveyor belt machine – a machine that has animal like characteristics – looms menacingly above the viewer from behind a wall in what feels like a tense standoff that could see the machine walk over the wall and give chase at any moment.

Another image titled ‘Encrucijada’ shows a number of bollards that bear an intriguing resemblance to uniformed soldiers standing guard. A sense of tension and anticipation is created by the bright light coming from the right hand side of the image – the source of which is again unknown. Is it friend or foe?

The theatrical and animated images that Baraja produces are the sort of images that one never tires of because of the number of different ways they can be interpreted and read. Every time I see one of Baraja’s photos I can’t help but be drawn into the drama and intrigue that the images evoke.

Join the PurePhoto Fine Art Photography Movement – artmarketblog.com

The experience of purchasing fine art photography online is about to change drastically thanks to the launch of an awesome new site called PurePhoto. PurePhoto is the brainchild of a group of world renowned photographers who came to the realisation that the process of purchasing fine art photography online could be so much more enjoyable and rewarding. Choosing to purchase fine art online is a great alternative for those who prefer not to be exposed to the snobbery of the gallery world – however, the trade-off has has been lack of interaction with the artist and their work that one would usually receive when visiting a gallery, but not online. That is, until now. What PurePhoto have done is create a platform that not only gives buyers the freedom to browse the fantastic offerings at their leisure, but also gives buyers the opportunity to interact with a community of other buyers and artists in a social network style setting. If you have ever been too intimidated to enter a pretentious gallery space, or felt disillusioned by an uninspiring and cold experience with an online gallery, then PurePhoto is the place for you.

According to the PurePhoto site:

“PurePhoto is a new kind of site – a social commerce network – that directly connects art collectors to photographers. We have fused art education, social networking, and buying into a single site. Whether you’re buying your first piece, an established collector, an artist, or an interior designer, PurePhoto makes it easy to discover and purchase new images from all over the world without leaving the comfort of your pajamas. You won’t have to visit 15 galleries, get accosted by a man named Dieter in a black turtleneck or be turned away because you have never heard of the artist. We are revolutionizing art sales by making it easy for everyone to discover, connect and collect. Join the movement.”

Not only is PurePhoto very attractive and easy to navigate, there are also many fantastic features integrated into the site that make finding the right photograph to turn your interior space into a special place a great experience. If you are looking for a photo to complement a particular decor then you will definitely be interested in the sort by colour feature. Looking for an image to continue an interior theme or indulge a personal passion? Then you will love the ability to search by subject category. If you just feel like browsing through a range of beautiful and awe inspiring images then you can do so at your leisure. Fine art photography collectors will feel more than at home in the special section for internationally recognized photographers with a demonstrated history of gallery exhibits, awards, or publications. As well as being able to choose from an awesome range of highly collectable works by world renowned photographers, collectors also have the advantage of being able to interact with other collectors who share the same passion and motivation as well as with the artist’s themselves. If being able to discuss an amazing photograph with the artist who took the photo sounds like a great opportunity, and being able to share your passion for photography with other passionate photophiles sounds like fun, then you know where you need to head.

I am particularly pleased to see that PurePhoto have taken every effort to ensure that the prints they are selling are of the absolute highest quality and standard with all prints made using professional, museum-grade archival paper with a lustre finish. For all the fine art photography connoisseurs out there, PurePhoto have taken great care to ensure that a range of awesome limited edition prints are available for purchase that will satisfy even the most fussy collector. To be honest, I could rabbit on about the benefits of the PurePhoto concept for many more pages (and will write more soon) but for now will instead leave you to join the site and experience the benefits of being part of the PurePhoto movement for yourself.

To join the PurePhoto movement all you have to do is head to:

In August of 2007, Jen Bekman launched the online art store 20×200 (http://www.20×200.com) with a mission to make fine art available to everyone. Bekman’s concept of selling one print in a range of physical sizes and edition sizes at varying price levels caters to everyone from the serious collector to those who just want something to decorate their home. Each week two new works are released one of which is a photographic work and one of which is a work on paper. The prints range in size and price from 8″ by 10″ prints from an edition of 200 which cost $20 to 40″ by 30″ prints from an edition of 2 which cost $2000 with other options in between.

Jen Bekman’s US based 20×200 had the niche all to themselves until the UK based Troika Editions opened for business in April this year. Troika Editions is a new online gallery with a focus on contemporary photography which offers a new photographic image for sale each week made available as limited editions prints which vary in size, price and edition number just like 20×200. All their prints come with a certificate signed by the artist and a unique edition number which is what one would expect from anyone selling a top quality fine art edition. According to the Troika editions website “Each art work will be offered in the same three sizes, small, medium and large; in the same three edition runs of 300, 30 and 3; at the same prices of £35, £350 and £3500. All you have to do is decide which one you like.”

The artists whose work is chosen to be sold as limited edition prints by Troika are carefully selected by a curator because of their current success and future potential. The website states that “Troika Editions showcases exciting and beautiful work by photographers with a pedigree. These are the next photo stars; they have won awards, published books and had exhibitions. We believe they are artists to watch in the future”. So far things look good for Troika editions with the current offerings appearing to be highly desirable and top quality. I’m a particular fan of the slightly eerie but very intriguing work ‘Sand Blaster’ by Bill Jackson (see image) who just won the silver award in the Royal Photographic Society 152nd International Print Exhibition. Jackson has a very extensive cv that includes lots of solo and group exhibitions as well as an impressive list of rewards which suggests that he is definitely an artist worth investing in.

The financial crisis has undoubtedly had a significant effect on the arts especially those non-profit organisations that are the backbone of the art world. Many non-profit art organisations have funding programs that involve the sale of works of art so why not help support the arts and take advantage of some of the bargains currently available. The Humble Arts Foundation is a well known not-for-profit organisation that works to advance the careers of emerging fine art photographers. Like many other arts organisations, the Humble Arts Foundation is doing it tough. There are two ways you can help the Humble Arts Foundation. The first involves making a tax deductable donation of $15 or more which, if 3500 people obliged, would give Humble enough funds to continue supporting and exhibiting the work of emerging art photographers through 2012. The second way you can help support Humble is by purchasing one of their fantastic limited edition prints. To sweeten the deal a discount of 30% is available to those who use the code HAF30 which makes the Humble prints even better value.

To make a donation go here:

or to view the available prints go here:

Another photography related organisation that I’m sure would love your support is the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago. According to their website the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP) is the only museum in the Midwest with an exclusive commitment to the medium of photography. By presenting projects and exhibitions that embrace a wide range of contemporary aesthetics and technologies, the Museum strives to communicate the value and significance of photographic images as expressions of human thought, imagination, and creativity. The MoCP recently launched their 2009 series of fine photographic prints which includes works by Amy Stein and Michael Wolf. To see all the fantastic prints available check out:

As I have mentioned before, the great thing about iGavel auctions is that all the sellers are professionals and all the objects offered on the iGavel site are guaranteed for authenticity and condition. The only way anyone other than the a registered associate of iGavel can sell an item on the site is by consigning items through one of the iGavel associates. This means that the items being sold on iGavel are all sold by industry professionals. Founded by Lark Mason, the former director of online auctions at Sothebys, iGavel is a fantastic source of top quality fine art at reasonable prices.

One of the most popular sellers on iGavel is Daniel Cooney Fine Art, a Brooklyn based gallery specialising in photographs and works on paper. Daniel Cooney Fine Art hold auctions on iGavel three times a year and always have fantastic range of works to choose from at very good prices. The current auction which ends on the 18th of February offers some beautiful images by long time luminaries such as William Eggleston, Joel Meyerowitz and Garry Winogrand.
Daniel Cooney Fine Art is currently conducting an online auction on igavel of 40 photographs by some of the best emerging photographers. Amy Finkelstein, Juliana Beasley, Nina Buesing, Shen Wei and Jon Feinstein are just some of the artists whose work is included in the auction. Daniel Cooney Fine Art is a highly respected gallery based in Chelsea, NY that deals primarily in photographs and works on paper by emerging artists and under recognised work by established artists. According to igavel “Daniel Cooney Fine Art is proud to announce our second Emerging Photographers Auction with iGavel. The auction is a curated group of 40 images by very promising emerging talent. This is a special opportunity to introduce young artists to collectors at all levels as all reserves are set at $200.” You can view the available works and submit bids here:
http://auction.igavel.com/AuctionHelp.taf?S=N&R=2&C=2&return=50&sort=1&ST=1&days=&category_id=&_start=1&keyword=E1DA&_UserReference=7F000001477C6F560C1CB431B343495F75C2

In my opinion, the best work in the auction is “The Divide” by Mark William Fernandes. What impresses me the most about “The Divide” is the way that Fernandes has used captured moments of a natural and random event in a way that appears to have been carefully orchestrated. The patterns and shapes created by the waves and the pools appear to have been purposely placed in the position they appear in to create a balanced abstract composition. I also love the intensity and energy of this photo which is enhanced by the moody lighting that is reminiscent of the dark, moody paintings of the Dutch masters. According to Fernandes (from igavel website): “I use photography to (re-)construct how I wish to perceive my vision, rather than what I really see. My work deals with memory and recurrent themes based on the collapsing of time and space through a conceptual process of digital manipulation of photographs. My subjects are drawn from my interest in non-linear perception. My artistic process is based on the fragmenting and reconstructing of space. My photographs are composed of multiple moments in time. I create an extended archive of the moment, in which I take numerous shots of the same scene or space, each image shifting slightly in time and viewpoint. I seek out and construct imagery that transports the viewer to an alternative version of reality. The dreamlike, ambiguous nature of my images does not provide an answer to whether the represented content really happened.”

Fernandes was born in Munich, Germany and is a graduate of the prestigious Parsons MFA program. His has been exhibited in group shows in Australia, USA, Germany and Turkey and has been featured in several publications. You can find our more about Mark and his work at his website http://www.markfernandes.net/ and you can bid on “The Divide” here:

A new auction record was set for photographer Helmut Newton at a Christie’s auction on the the 16th of December when the work “Sie Kommen, (Naked and Dressed)” sold for $ $662,500 (including buyers premium) against an estimate of US$400,000-600,000. The details of the record setting work as as follows:

Newton is one of the most influential fashion photographers of all time and one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. The fact that a new auction record was set for Newton during such a difficult time for the art market is testament to the desirability of Newton’s work and the influence he had on the history of fine art photography. Not all of Newton’s photographs are as expensive as his new auction record suggests. Works produced in larger editions such as the work “Cyberwoman 7″ are available for under USD$10,000. On the 11th of December a print of “Cyberwoman 7″ was sold at Heritage Auction Galleries for USD$5500 (hammer price) against an estimate of USD$4000-6000.

Once again the great price achieved for “Cyberwoman 7″ shows how highly regarded the artist’s work is. Interestingly, while searching the net to see whether there were any works available by Newton that were good value I came across another print of “Cyberwoman 7″ available for sale at Eyestorm for GBP 2,500. Considering that the print of “Cyberwoman 7″ that sold at Heritage Auctions went for GBP 3,691, GBP 2,500 for the same work seems like a pretty good deal. With the market for Newton’s work showing such strength at a time of general market distress the future for the price of Newton’s work seems very positive. An investment in Newton at the current time would be a very wise decision indeed. You can check out “Cyberwoman 7″ and other Newton works for sale at Eyestorm here:

The Constantiner Collection of Photographs went under the hammer on the 16th and 17th of December at Christie’s New York. A total of US$7,721,875 against an estimate of US$7.5 million to US$11 million represented a very successful sale especially considering that the collection achieved the highest total for a single owner dedicated photographs sale at Christie’s. As I have reported in previous posts, a trend has become evident in recent months where sales of single owner collections are achieving extremely good results both in terms of the percentage of works being sold and the total value of works sold. The results of the Constantiner Collection suggest that this trend is continuing. To read an explanation of this trend see these posts:

Included in the sale of the collection which was assembled by Leon and Michaela Constantiner were works by Warhol, Newton, Mapplethorpe, Penn and others. According to a Christie’s press release “this spectacular collection focused on photography as a key shaping force within the media worlds that have, for over half a century, celebrated fashion, style, celebrity and desire”. The collection included a particularly large and impressive selection of works by Helmut Newton as well as a number of photographs of Marilyn Monroe who was the focus of the collection. The highlight of the auction was a work by Newton titled “Sie Kommen, (Naked and Dressed)” which sold for US$662,500 (estimate US$400,000-600,000) which is a new auction record for Newton.
