warhol silver car crash Sothebys Smash Warhol Auction Record with “Silver Car Crash” artmarketblog.comSotheby’s has continued this week’s incredible run of contemporary art auctions with their November 13 Contemporary Evening sale which produced a new world auction record for Andy Warhol of US$105,445,000 and the highest total of any auction in the Company’s history.

The highlight of the US$380,642,000 sale was Warhol’s monumental  8 ft. by 13 ft. masterpiece “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)” which surpassed its US$60,000,000 estimate to become the second most expensive work of contemporary art sold at auction.

As the only one of his four Car Crash works still in private hands, and having been in the same collection since 1988 during which time it has only been seen in public once, “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)” was always going to be popular, but not even Sotheby’s could have predicted the amazing result.

“The night truly belonged to Andy Warhol,” commented Tobias Meyer, Worldwide Head of Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s and the evening’s auctioneer. “Silver Car Crash is the most important work of Contemporary art we have ever had the privilege to offer, and its exceptional result is a testament to that fact. With access to more information than ever, the sophistication of our clients from every corner of the globe impresses me with every sale.”

The November 13 sale also saw new auction records for Cy Twombly, Agnes Martin, Martin Kippenberger, Brice Marden, Bruce High Quality Foundation, and Mark Bradford. The second highest price of the sale was achieved with Cy Twombly’s “Poems to the Sea,” 1959, which sold for US$21,669,000 against an estimate of US$6,000,000 – 8,000,000.
