There is no doubt that your premise is correct that interested collectors or even dilettantes must turn their attention to the “historical, cultural and artistic value of art” in 2010. A struggling world economy forces art to be considered for its aesthetic qualities instead of its monetary worth or the prestige of owning it. I am not an authority on European art, but I believe that American collectors have turned to new (and traditional) considerations in the acquisition of art, especially paintings. In America, vintage photography is still highly sought after and a great work by Ansel Adams still fetches a high price owing to its rarity and importance.

As I’ve pointed out in my “American Art: Bull Market?” blog [ http://richardlove.wordpress.com/2009/12/07/american-art-bull-market/ ], I, too, predict a strong market for high quality images, especially modern works from post-1920 through 1960. I’m not convinced, however, that contemporary works will stay strong as the collectors look forward to the new year. Optimism for outstanding imagery will be an important factor and far more important than simple investment.

Hi Nic

The reason for the interest in Coorte's work is because there was a recent (2008) retrospective of his work in Den Haag at the Mauritshuis.
http://printaustralia.blogspot.com/2008/07/adriaen-coorte.html

I have the catalogue here in Sydney.

regards
