With all sorts of people from aspiring chefs to wannabe models getting the chance strut their stuff on television while competing with other contestants for honour and glory, it is about time that artists got a slice of the pie. You may remember a show called Artstar that aired in 2006 where artists were a group of carefully selected emerging artists were given the chance to strut their stuff. Well, it appears that this Untitled Art Project program takes things a step further and will actually give artists the chance to compete with other artists for the chance to win some sort of prize – presumably some sort of promotional opportunity. It sounds like this show is going to be really awesome so I would encourage all eligible artists to enter. For more information see the press release and associated links below

How do you go from struggling, emerging or even semi-established artist to selling a complete show for $198 million? It’s a big art world out there, but maybe this is one place to start!

Magical Elves (Peabody Award-winning Project Runway, Emmy Award-winning Top Chef) and Sarah Jessica Parker (Golden Globe- and Emmy Award-winner) and her production company, Pretty Matches, are teaming up for an hour-long creative competition series among aspiring contemporary artists who will create and compete to conquer the art world!

If you’re an emerging or mid-career visual artist with a unique, powerful voice that demands a bigger stage – well. . . Here.  It.  Is.

We want contemporary artists. Your medium could be one of many (or several of many) – painting, sculpture, installation, video, photography, mixed-media – we want voices that believe in their art and want the world to know.

    The Artist Reality show is fascinating, but I am extremely camera shy, have been a recluse for quite a while. Althought, I am a people magnet. I like to see things in people, art, etc., that aren’t visible to the naked eye

    Actually, this is the first challenge that has interested me in a long while. I would love to go for it, but I am much older now (65) and less resilient than I used to be. The thought of a casting call is unimaginable now. Wish the tryouts were in Raleigh, NC or closer to Murrells Inlet, SC. Do they make house calls? lol

    I will watch the show and cheer on the selected artists. What an honor in itself it will be for them to be chosen for the FIRST new Art Reality show.

    hi Nicholas – don’t just too high too fast -it’s not an “art world” show it’s American show (even thought that the American’s like to see themselves as the “world”) – “You must be (a) a citizen of the U.S” .

    as well the term “reality show” when it comes to art is really interesting – our dear friend Andy promised each one of us 15 min of been in the T.V and i guess that nowadays we get a little bit more.

    on top of that don’t forget the bottom line – money….

      i was talking about that this is American show – only Americans can participate in it, as well it brings alot of interesting questions regarding art, media and our society these days.

        Where do you live? Yes, this particular show may be an American creation and opportunity, but that shouldn’t alter the idea behind making a reality Art Show concept happen. If you are not able to paricipate in the American vision, you can promote this idea in your country, province or town. Now, that would be a challenge! Do you think you might elaborate on the “interesting questions regarding art, media and our society these days” that you mentioned?

        I live in Israel.
        and yeah, some thoughts are – is good art what gets better rating ?
        who decide what is “good” art – the viewer, or the curators, gallery owner etc (at the t.v show and in “real” life as well).
        the artist in this show also can bring and present as well works/mediums that “can’t” sell – performance art (like the work of Marina Abramovic – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDg_KWJh1g8 or the work Sophie Calle that i sae 2 years ago in Venice – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pn7e8iR8AoI or real contemporary work – that only exist short time.

        another question is sex – in all these reality shows this is one of the main sensations – who hooks up with who and if you can get a glimpse of that – “reality” – why then not the artist can save all that and make “pure” love infront of the cameras ….

        - and trust me – as a “secret artist” – that with my work i talk about marketing, exposure, self branding, the politics and the name games in the art world, tagging, asking who is an artist and what his rule in society and what is art and few other things i would love to be in that kind show – it’s not going to take that long till they will bring it to Israel…

    read the fine print on the 23 page application, you in essence give up all or the majority of your privacy rights, if your career or reputation is damaged by your participation you have no recourse. Editing is at there discretion. Could it be the big break artists flock to New York seeking ? Possibly but who are the judges, the panels, and what exactly is the big break you receive???? If you are mid career, this is more of a risk to consider while as a beginner or art student you really can’t go wrong in trying this out.

    i can see this art competition reality t.v. show being pretty cheesy. canada had this reality about interior design and industrial design hosted by this woman “Debbie Travis” which had some cool “challenges” and the first prize was that you’d become Travis’ assistant designing some big condominium project with her. i’d at least check out one episode of the art reality show to see how bad (or good) it is, but would never consider personally entering.

    i can see it now though – i tall, moody art school dropout type of guy gets super drunk at the mega mansion on the first night, getting in a catfight over who got to choose the nicest bedroom and subsequently sabotages the work of his rival, by painting over their piece du resistance!
    freaking reality t.v. man.

    Life is a gamble. You either go for it or you don’t. You have a choice. I have taken several leaps of faith with my art. If the opportunity sounded sketchy, I understood the risks I was taking and wasn’t planning on complaining if it went bad. Do I read fear woven into your comment? Well, breathe easy, you can just say no and watch the leapers take their knocks and, perhaps, reap some rewards from the jump into the unknown. I love entering the unknown. The planned out world bores me. Unfortunately, I can not afford nor am I willing to leave my three rescued cats for long periods of time to jump into this challenge. If I had no beloved animals and had a little money, I just might take the leap.
