Another aspect to mention: Have in mind that the benefits offered by galleries (which you named very well) are paid by the customer with a higher price for the works. In recent studies it is shown that the price level of galleries can be up to 400% higher than in the auction market at bearish markets like today (for the same pieces). Over more than 30 years the prices in galleries have been about twice as high as in auctions. In boom times this difference reduces to "only" 25% higher prices at galleries.
See http://www.arteconomics.com/publications/two-games-in-town.html for more information.
